Maintaining Your Garage Door

Your garage door is a good investment for many reasons. The garage door keeps the dust, snow, and debris from getting on your vehicle. It can keep your car cool in the summer and warm in the winter, so you do not have to experience the elements when you first go to work in the morning. A garage with a nice garage door is a very good thing to have, but you have to maintain your garage door for it to continue to look good and function properly. Here are a few things that you can do to keep your garage door working properly.

Well Balanced

One of the most important things that you can do is keep your garage door well balanced. Having a garage door well balanced simply means that it moves up and down the rails properly. To check if your garage has proper balance unplug it from power. Then lift the garage door up to your hip and let go. If the garage door moves up or down then it is not balanced properly, and you should have a technician look at the garage door. If a garage door is allowed to stay out of balance for a long period of time, it can cause serious damage to the garage door.

Tracks

The metal tracks that the garage door wheels travel back and forth on should be washed and free of debris. If there is debris on the tracks then it can slowly put more strain on the engine and it can break down easier. It can also force the garage door off the tracks. It is important that when you clean them, that you clean the tracks with hot water. Do not ever clean them with a lubricant because the wheels will try to slide instead of roll.

Moving Parts

Each garage door is a little bit different but there are going to be parts that you will want to lubricate each month. The chain needs to be slightly lubricated, and parts of the engine will also need to be lubricated. It is important that you do in fact lubricate these parts to keep your garage door working properly. Many people forget that a garage door runs from many moving parts that all need to be well oiled. If you notice that the garage door is going slower or is losing out on some power, do not hesitate to call a technician to look at the door.
